NEW! Obtaining course materials just became easier! Beginning Fall 2024, registered students will be enrolled in the Charter Oak Book Bundle, designed to lower costs and automatically deliver the course materials students need prior to the first day of class.

The Program

We understand that course materials costs can be very high. Starting in fall 2024, Charter Oak has created a more affordable way to gather your course materials at the start of the semester. Charter Oak’s Book Bundle gives all undergraduate and graduate students access to all required textbooks, lab manuals, access codes and electronic book versions in a convenient bundle before the first day of class—in most cases, at discounted prices.

Through a partnership with Barnes & Noble, Charter Oak’s Book Bundle allows students to receive required course materials for all classes for a per credit fee, regardless of how much each individual textbook or digital access would cost to rent separately.

Instead of purchasing materials a la carte, the rental cost is applied to the student’s account at the same time tuition is charged. The digital materials are automatically populated to students’ Blackboard courses. Students that have courses that require physical textbooks can have the books shipped to their house for free as it is included in the course materials fee.

As compared to the cost of purchasing textbooks a la carte, the Charter Oak Book Bundle will result in many students being able to save between 20%-50%!

How It Works

  1. Register for Classes
Upon registering for courses, students will be automatically enrolled into the program. Once you've successfully selected your courses, the bookstore will start preparing your order.
  2. Verify Your Order
Starting 30 days before the first day of classes, you will receive an email to verify your order and select your fulfillment preference.
  3. Receive Your Course Materials
An email notification will be sent when your order is ready to be shipped to you for physical textbooks. Your digital materials will be automatically delivered for your courses in Blackboard.

How Much It Costs

The Charter Oak Book Bundle program is a course material model that ensures undergraduate and graduate students have all their materials across all courses prior to the first day of class and reduces the cost of materials. Instead of purchasing materials a la carte, all undergraduate and graduate students will receive their required course materials for a rental fee of $18.75 per credit, added to their student account upon registration (Course Materials Fee).

Accepted financial aid (grants, scholarships, loans) can be used towards the $18.75 per credit fee. Financial Aid will first apply towards tuition, and mandatory fees. Any financial aid remaining after those charges have been paid will be applied towards miscellaneous fees including the $18.75 per credit Course Materials Fee.

The Charter Oak Book Bundle program makes getting textbooks easier on students, which will ultimately improve their success. Not only will students receive their course materials by the first day of class, but many will save an average of 20%-50% as compared to the traditional way of purchasing course materials.

The program provides all required textbooks, lab manuals, access codes and digital course materials to students in the delivery format (physical or digital) as found in the Required Textbooks section of the syllabus.

The program does not include consumables that cannot be returned and reused such as lab goggles, dissection kits, molecular model kits, engineering kits or nursing kits. Optional course materials are also not included. Courses that are non-credit are excluded from this program.

All undergraduate and graduate students are eligible and will be automatically enrolled in the Charter Oak Book Bundle program upon registration.

Yes, the program provides you with the option to purchase textbooks at your expense at a reduced rate during the rental return period.

Yes, students can choose to opt out and not be charged the $18.75 per credit fee. While this program is expected to ease the process of obtaining required course materials and lower overall costs, students have the option to opt-out of this program. Students will be sent an email that provides a link to Opt Out. The opt-out period will be available to students until the Sunday after classes start.

If you choose to opt-out, that will apply for each class that semester and cannot be done on a course-by-course basis. The decision to opt-out or not opt-out of the program is decided by you each semester.

Each student is responsible for deciding if it makes sense for them to opt-out of the program. In general, students will see significant savings by being in the program. However, there are some scenarios where opting out might be the best option. For example, if the courses a student is enrolled in for the semester use free or low-cost course materials, they may see further savings beyond the $18.75 per credit Course Materials Fee. Also, if a student prefers to purchase instead of rent many of the textbooks for the semester and finds an affordable price on those materials compared to the bookstore, it may make sense to opt-out for that semester. Students who proactively research their best options will be able to make the most informed decision for themselves.

Once opted out, students will not receive access to course materials and will be responsible for purchasing all required course materials from the Charter Oak Bookstore or other retailers.

To change your status and opt into the Charter Oak Book Bundle program, please click on the Opt In link located on your Confirmation Opt Out email. The last date to opt back in is Sunday after classes start.

For students beginning after the start of the semester you can still opt-out by the Sunday after classes start.

Students will receive emails from the bookstore reminding them to verify their order. If the student does not opt-out but never verifies their order, physical materials will not be shipped to your desired location. It is important to verify your order and shipping address if your courses require a physical textbook. Digital materials will be available within your Blackboard courses. The $18.75 per credit Course Materials Fee will be charged to your student account for physical and digital materials even if you do not verify your order.

If you have received your Charter Oak Book Bundle package, you must return any physical textbooks for the dropped course within 48 hours. If you drop a class and enroll in a different class that requires digital materials, the materials will be delivered directly to your Blackboard course.

The deadline to return all rental textbooks is immediately after the last day of class. Students will receive email reminders about the rental deadline to their Charter Oak email address.

All students in the Charter Oak Book Bundle program using digital materials should be directed to contact Bookstore Customer Care at bookstorecustomercare@bncollege.com for assistance.

Returning Rental Materials

End of Semester

One of the ways that the Charter Oak Book Bundle stays affordable for students is by delivering most physical course materials on a rental basis each semester. That means that those physical books are due back to the Bookstore immediately after the end of class.

You will receive several reminder e-mails towards the end of term with instructions as to how to return these books to make sure they are checked in properly.

Rental FAQs

Just use the return shipping label available online. You can print it as often as you like, but you can only use it once. So, if you're returning multiple books, please put them in one box and use one shipping label.

Yes! If you decide you want to keep your rental book, you can opt to buy at any time during your rental period, unless the rental book is identified as a 'Rental Only' title, which is not available for purchase at any time.

Normal use of highlighting and writing is permitted. The bookstore will use the same standards for determining acceptable condition of rental textbooks that it uses for determining condition of books sold back as used books.

Yes, the bookstore can refuse to accept your rental book if it is not returned in good condition. Good condition will be judged by the bookstore alone, and generally means book spine intact, no excessive damage to cover or contents, all original pages intact, all original components present, and no excessive highlighting, writing or other markings. Normal-use highlighting and writing is permitted. If the bookstore determines your book to be not acceptable for return, then you will be responsible to pay for a replacement copy and a non-return processing fee.

You will be responsible to pay the bookstore a replacement and non-return processing fee, and the book will be yours to keep. The Bookstore will accept late returns, but there may be a processing fee associated with an overdue book.

You will be charged the replacement cost plus the non-return processing fee for any book not returned to the bookstore, regardless of the reason. These fees are in addition to the rental fee.

  • Replacement Cost is 75% of the selling price of your book at the time of purchase.
  • Non-return processing fee is 7.5% of the selling price at the time of purchase.
  • These fees are in addition to the rental fee.

As a courtesy, we will send a reminder notice to your Charter Oak e-mail address. However, it is your responsibility to return the book by the due date even if you do not receive this email. Please remember that rental books should be shipped back immediately after the course ends.
