Course Description
In this course, students will explore the prominent technologies and systems that are changing healthcare and the management of healthcare organizations. The electronic health record, databases, mobile health, telehealth, patient portals, and diagnostic technology will be covered. Students will explore how data analytics is changing the way management and care decisions are being made. Related legislation and healthcare reform will be discussed. Students will be introduced to artificial intelligence (AI) and how it is being used in healthcare currently, as well as possible future uses of AI. In addition, students will explore how technology is used for the many remote work roles now available in healthcare. Formerly titled: HCA 325: Technology in Healthcare (3 credits)

Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)
Students who successfully complete this course will be able to:
- Discuss the purpose and value of the electronic health record.
- Apply basic healthcare database functions.
- Describe the advantages of the use of an electronic health record over paper records.
- Distinguish between mobile health and telehealth.
- Explain the use of telehealth and mobile health for self-care and remote care.
- Relate healthcare technology and legislation that determines its use.
- Identify the value of intervention and diagnostic technology.
- Discuss the effect of social media on healthcare.
- Describe artificial intelligence and how it can be used in patient care and for management functions.
- Describe the use and purpose of data analytics in healthcare.
- Determine privacy and security issues surrounding the use of technology in healthcare.
- Apply the use of remote work tools.
- Demonstrate basic tasks in an electronic health record.
- Define consumer health informatics and the patient portal.
